Proverbs Chapter 23
1 When thou sittest to
eat with a ruler, consider diligently what
is before thee:
2 And put a knife to thy
throat, if thou be
a man given to appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his
dainties: for they are
deceitful meat.
4 Labour not to be rich:
cease from thine own wisdom.
1 Tim 6:9 But they that will
be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and
into many
foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction
and perdition.
Romans 12:16 Be
of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things,
but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own
conceits.
5 Wilt thou set thine
eyes upon that which is not? for
riches
certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle
toward heaven.
6 Eat thou not the bread
of him that hath
an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
Duet 15:9 Beware that there be
not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year,
the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil
against thy poor brother, and thou givest him nought; and he
cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
7 For as he thinketh in
his heart, so is
he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart
is not with
thee.
Psalms 12:2 They speak vanity
every one with his neighbour:
with flattering
lips and
with a double heart do they speak.
8 The morsel
which thou hast
eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
9 Speak not in the ears
of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Proverbs 8:8 Reprove not a
scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will
love thee.
Matt 7:6 Give not that which is holy
unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine,
lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and
rend you.
10 Remove not the old
landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
11 For their redeemer
is mighty;
he shall plead their cause with thee.
Prov 22:23 For the LORD will
plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled
them.
12 Apply thine heart
unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
13 Withhold not
correction from the child: for
if thou beatest
him with the rod, he shall not die.
Prov 13:24 He that spareth his
rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him
betimes.
14 Thou shalt beat him
with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
15 My son, if thine
heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
16 Yea, my reins shall
rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
17 Let not thine heart
envy sinners: but be
thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
Psalms 37:1 (A
Psalm of David.) Fret not thyself because of
evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of
iniquity.
Prov 28:14 Happy is
the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart
shall fall into mischief.
18 For surely there is
an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
Psalms 37:37 Mark the perfect
man, and
behold the upright: for the end of
that man
is peace.
19 Hear thou, my son,
and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
20 Be not among
winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
Isaiah 5:22 Woe unto
them that are
mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong
drink:
21 For the drunkard and
the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall
clothe a man
with rags.
22 Hearken unto thy
father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she
is old.
Prov 1: 8 My son, hear the
instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy
mother:
Eph 6:1-2
1 Children, obey your
parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2 Honour thy father
and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
23 Buy the truth, and
sell it
not; also
wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Matt 13:34
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a
field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for
joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth
that field.
24 The father of the
righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a
wise child
shall have joy of him.
Prov 10:1 The proverbs of
Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son
is the
heaviness of his mother.
25 Thy father and thy
mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
26 My son, give me thine
heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
27 For a whore
is a deep
ditch; and a strange woman
is a narrow
pit.
Prov 22:14 The mouth of
strange women is
a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall
therein.
28 She also lieth in
wait as for
a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
Prov 7:12 Now
is she without,
now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
Eccl 7:26 And I find more bitter than death the woman,
whose heart is
snares and nets, and
her hands as
bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the
sinner shall be taken by her.
29 Who hath woe? who
hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who
hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
Isaiah
5:11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning,
that they may
follow strong drink; that continue until night,
till wine
inflame them!
5:22 Woe unto them
that are mighty to drink wine, and men of
strength to mingle strong drink:
Gen 49:12 His eyes
shall be red
with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
30 They that tarry long
at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with
wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Psalms 75:8 For in the hand of the LORD
there is a cup,
and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth
out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of
the earth shall wring
them out,
and drink
them.
31 Look not thou upon
the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the
cup, when
it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth
like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 Thine eyes shall
behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse
things.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as
he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that
lieth upon the top of a mast.
35 They have stricken
me, shalt thou say, and
I was not sick; they have beaten me,
and I felt
it not: when
shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
Jer 5:3 O LORD,
are not thine
eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have
not grieved; thou hast consumed them,
but they have
refused to receive correction: they have made their faces
harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
Eph 4:19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over
unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with
greediness.
